The SOFIA project – Social and health Frailty as determinants of Inequality in Ageing

The ageing of the population is a growing challenge in Europe, and the SOFIA project is committed to exploring its implications for the health and well-being of older adults, while reducing the long-term costs associated with ageing.

As we address the challenges posed by an ageing population, the SOFIA project brings together several Italian universities to investigate a key factor: frailty, which refers to increased vulnerability in older individuals. Our goal is to propose measures of frailty in various fields (e.g. physical frailty, social frailty) and, starting from different types of data (e.g. administrative, sample surveys), to understand how frailty relates to both health and socio-economic factors. By uncovering these connections, we can develop more effective policies to support our ageing population. The project also endeavours to project regional population trends based on demographic, socio-economic, and health variables. Our overarching mission is to enhance the quality of life for older individuals and play a pivotal role in fostering a healthier and more sustainable ageing society.
